The Lower Saxony Democracy Monitor (NDM) surveyed 1,000 randomly selected Lower Saxons aged 16 and over about their political attitudes. This is the third representative population survey conducted by the NDM after 2019 and the coronavirus summer of 2021. We summarise the results of the survey under the heading "Politics in a confidence crisis" which is characterised by • a decline in trust in political institutions and actors; • a decline in satisfaction with democracy, with the youngest generation no longer differing from the older cohorts in their dissatisfaction; • a poor assessment of future prospects – at over 47%, even among the youngest cohort of respondents; • dissatisfaction with federal government performance, but not with Lower Saxony state government; • but relatively stable fundamental support for the principles and values of representative democracy.
