The growing popularity of nature spiritual and shamanic themes across many domains of alternative spirituality has led to the intertwining of previously separate genres, yet the ideological relationships underlying these connections have received little scholarly attention. Building on original qualitative field research, this study therefore examines, using the case of Shamanic Yoga, how this relatively recent bricolage is rendered intelligible and justified by its practitioners themselves. An analysis of possible influences from the work of the controversial religious studies scholar Mircea Eliade reveals particular world view continuities that become explicable when recent insights from contemporary myth research are incorporated. This book illustrates the complexity of the new interrelations of spiritual practice pathways and highlights the crucial role played by specific mythic narratives. In the context of Shamanic Yoga, however, these narratives run counter to prevailing assumptions in the field of religious studies that portray contemporary spirituality as a borderless, individualized, and fluid phenomenon.
