'Über die Vielfalt des Umgangs mit Traditionen' (About the Diversity of Dealing with Traditions) explores synagogue singing in central Europe in the 19th century, focusing mainly on developments in Seesen, Hamburg, Berlin, Braunschweig and Vienna. By concentrating on printed, German-language collections of songs sung in synagogues and in religious education, the book reveals processes of change that took place in connection with reform-oriented movements. It shows that in this context tradition is a dynamic and multifaceted process, which is not limited to merely preserving and codifying inherited practices, but is also a process of updating the traditions for the respective present. With the help of Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory the study reveals interconnections between synagogue singing and cultural as well as music-historical currents at the time and shows parallels with Christian communities and the bourgeois concert system.
