This study provides a retrospective analysis of the German anti-lockdown protests during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Querdenken movement, examining the lasting shadows they continue to cast. Based on the current state of social science research, it reconstructs the transformation of far-right protest in Germany during and after the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the unique characteristics of the Querdenken phenomenon and its surprisingly persistent resonance in society. For readers in politics and journalism, the study offers an overview of recent developments in far-right protest, background information to better understand current public discontent, and accessible concepts and metaphors to explain complex dynamics. For those in prevention and counter-extremism work, it provides insights into the internal logic of epistemically radicalized groups like Querdenken, as well as an analysis of the strategies, infrastructures and mobilization potential of far-right protest. For scholars, the study presents a comprehensive, thematically organized, and annotated review of the research landscape. For students, it uses the most widespread far-right protests in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany to introduce fundamental concepts in protest and social movement studies.
